Tackling the Battery Recycling Challenge
As the global demand for renewable energy grows, so does the need for efficient and sustainable energy storage solutions— particularly high-capacity lithium-ion batteries. However, recycling these batteries presents increasing technical and environmental challenges.
The DemoRec project aims to significantly improve the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of battery recycling processes. Through the development of automated technologies, the project contributes to the responsible use of valuable resources and supports the transition toward a circular economy.

Key Objectives of the DemoRec Project
1. Increase Automation and Industrialization
DemoRec seeks to raise the level of automation in battery dismantling, taking into account the wide variety of battery types. A combined product and process database will enable flexible and scalable dismantling solutions tailored to different battery designs.
2. Development of an Automated Dismantling Cell
A key objective is to design and implement a fully automated dismantling cell. This system will include a comprehensive safety concept to protect both operators and equipment, ensuring reliable and secure recycling operations.
3. Mapping of Pre- and Post-Processes
By analyzing factors such as battery discharge depth and dismantling depth, the project aims to optimize upstream and downstream processes. This analysis will help streamline operations and increase the overall efficiency of battery recycling workflows.
4. Design for Dismantling Guidelines
The project will also develop practical design guidelines that support manufacturers in creating battery systems with future dismantling and recycling in mind. These “Design for Dismantling” principles are intended to improve the recyclability of batteries over the long term.
