Disposable filtered and non-filtered robotic pipette tips are designed for use with automated liquid handling workstations. Within those systems, the robotic tips are used to rapidly and repetitively collect and transfer liquids. Due to the fully automatic handling process, robotic tips are subject to much tighter tolerances than tips for handheld pipettes. Robotic pipette tips are designed and packaged for easy use with the specific automated systems.

Challenge

When we first visited the customer, they were running multiple pipette tip models on very old and slow equipment and multiple lines were set up with single products not being fully utilized. The equipment was old and the OEE was less then 70%. Scrap rate was partially as high as 10%.

 

Developing a Solution

HAHN Automation Group offered to build an automation system to combine the production of five injection molding machines (IMM) and automations into one flexible system that can be equipped with different format sets to run the different products. The cycle time for each product were also shortened by roughly 30% due to faster part removal and newer production equipment (IMM and some molds).

Results

This automation approach significantly reduces scrap rates (less than 1%), increases efficiency (OEE 97%), and enhances process stability.
